BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The 12
th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Bloomington, Illinois, to take on the 18
th ranked Aurora (Ill.) University Spartans for a top 25 matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Spartans by a final score of 7-4 to improve to 19-5 on the season. With the loss, the Spartans drop to 17-5 on the year.
Webster put together 10 hits in the ballgame. The Gorloks bats were rolling from the start as they rallied for six runs in the top of the first thanks to RBI hits from
Parker Wielt,
A.J. Smith,
Malik Wirges,
Zach Goodman, and
Matt Staker. They added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when
Evan Evola hit an RBI single to put the Gorloks up 7-0. The Spartans battled back and rallied for four runs over the next two innings, but Webster was able to pick up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Carter Hunt was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out two in 4.0 innings.
Ben Kowalski (7-1) notched the win as he came in to relieve Hunt in the fifth, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out two.
Alek Elges struck out two in the final 1.1 innings of the game.
Evan Evola led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Matt Staker also had a nice game as he went 1-for-3 with two RBI. In addition,
Zach Goodman went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Park Wielt went 1-for-4 with an RBI,
A.J. Smith went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and
Malik Wirges went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Gorloks are back in action on Saturday, April 16
th when they travel to Elsah, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at noon with the second to follow.
