Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's tennis team was back in action this morning when they competed in the UMAC South Division Qualifying Tournament at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The Gorloks fell in their semifinal match to Principia (Ill.) College by a final score of 5-1 and then bounced back to win the third-place match over Westminster (Mo.) College by a final score of 8-1. With the split, the Gorloks move to 12-14 on the year.
Webster got off to a great start in their first match of the day as
Alex Pinkston and
Matthew Birchmeier defeated Ernesto Botero and Kuda Sandi in #1 doubles by a final score of 8-4. The win marked the pairs 15
th doubles win of the season which is a new men's tennis record. The Gorloks then went on to drop #2 and #3 doubles as
Carson Fisher and
Britton Struewing fell in #2 doubles by a final score of 8-6 while
Nicholas Granada and
Alex Magrath fell in #3 doubles by a final score of 8-3.
The Gorloks were unable to score a point in singles as the Panthers won all three finished matches.
Nicholas Granada fell in #3 singles by scores of 7-6 and 6-0.
Britton Struewing fell in #5 singles by final scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Lastly,
Robert McDaniel dropped #6 singles by final scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
In their second match of the day, Webster came out and swept all three doubles.
Alex Pinkston and
Matthew Birchmeier won #1 doubles by a final score of 8-0.
Carson Fisher and
Britton Struewing won #2 doubles by a final score of 8-4.
Nicholas Granada and
Alex Magrath completed the sweep as they won #3 doubles by forfeit.
Webster carried over their momentum into singles as they took five out of six matches.
Nicholas Granada won #1 singles by a final score of 8-4,
Andrew McDonald won #3 singles by a final score of 8-3,
Jack Forlenza won #4 singles by a final score of 8-1,
Alex Pinkston won #5 singles by forfeit, and
Carson Fisher won #6 singles by forfeit.
This marks the end of the 2022-2023 men's tennis season. The Gorloks finished the year with a 12-14 overall record and a 1-2 mark in UMAC play. The team will return to the courts in the fall.
