CASEYVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's golf team was back in action over the last three days when they traveled to Caseyville, Illinois, to compete in the SLIAC Men's Golf Championships at Far Oaks Golf Club. The Gorloks won the event as they shot a three-round score of 875 (299-295-281, +11) to beat out Spalding (Ky.) University by 25 strokes. This marks Webster's sixth straight SLIAC Men's Golf Championship and the 12
th in program history.
Jan Antonin Wdowka led the way for Webster as he became the fifth straight Gorlok to win the SLIAC Men's Golf Individual Championship. After shooting a 76 (+4) in the first round on Sunday, Wdowka bounced back on Monday and carded a round best 68 (-4) to put himself in contention. He then went on to shoot another 68 (-4) in the final round to finish the tournament with a 212 (-4) overall. He finished the tournament with 27 pars and was tied for the tournament lead with 14 birdies. He was able to eagle the final hole of the tournament to solidify his first career SLIAC Men's Golf Individual Championship.
Justin McCoy was not too far behind Wdowka as he finished in second place after shooting a three-round score of 215 (-1). McCoy opened the tournament with an impressive first round score of 71 (-1) to take a one stroke lead into the second round. After shooting a 78 (+6) on Monday, McCoy bounced back this afternoon and carded a round best 66 (-6) to help lift the Gorloks to a first-place finish. He ended the tournament with 31 pars, 11 birdies, and two eagles. This is his second career top five finish in the SLIAC Men's Golf Championship.
Austen Velazquez finished just outside the top five as he finished in a tie for seventh after shooting a three-round score of 225 (+9). He shot a 76 (+4) in the first round and a 77 (+5) in the second round to find himself in a tie for 16
th heading into the final round. He then went on to post a 72 (E) in the final round to move up nine spots into a tie for seventh. For the tournament, Velazquez recorded a team high 32 pars while finishing with seven birdies.
Trent Garrett and
Josh Hayes also finished in the top 10 as both finished in a tie for ninth with three-round scores of 228 (+12). Garrett shot a 76 (+4) in the first round and a 77 (+5) in the second round to put himself in a tie for 16
th heading into the final round. He then went on to card a 75 (+3) in the final round to move up seven spots into a tie for seventh. Hayes also shot a 76 (+4) in the first round but was able to card a 74 (+2) in the second round. He went on to shoot a 78 (+6) in the final round to record a top 10 finish. Garrett finished the tournament with 31 pars and seven birdies while Hayes finished with 27 pars and nine birdies.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced the all-conference teams as well as the superlative awards for the 2022-23 season. For their efforts in the tournament,

Austen Velazquez were all named First Team All-SLIAC while
Trent Garrett and
Josh Hayes were named Second Team All-SLIAC. In addition, Wdowka was named the SLIAC Men's Golfer of the Year, and the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, while
Brad Smith was named the SLIAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Justin McCoy was also named to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
With the win today, the Gorloks have qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship for the 10
th time in program history. The 2023 NCAA Division III National Championship will take place in Nicholasville, Kentucky, at Keene Trace Golf Club from Tuesday, May 16
th to Friday, May 19
th.
