FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Webster University men's tennis team opened its 2026-27 season on Saturday, competing against a pair of strong regional opponents at Franklin College. The Gorloks gained valuable early-season experience against Trine University and host Franklin College while picking up two singles victories against the Grizzlies.

Webster opened the day against Trine, with Juan Jose Munoz and Shawn Smith teaming up at No. 1 doubles, Gavin Jenkins and Griffin Olson competing at No. 2, and Hiroki Fingerhut and Patricio Santos at No. 3. Trine earned victories in all three doubles matches.

In singles play, Munoz, Smith, Olson, Jenkins, Fingerhut and Santos each competed in the opening match of the season.

The Gorloks then returned to the court against Franklin, where they picked up two victories in singles play.

Olson led the way at No. 3 singles, earning a straight-set victory over Andrew McIntyre, 7-5, 7-5. Jenkins also earned a win at No. 4 singles, taking the opening set, 6-4, before leading 3-2 in the second set when his Franklin opponent retired.

Webster also pushed Franklin in a pair of deciding match tiebreaks. Munoz battled to a 2-6, 6-4, 8-10 finish at No. 1 singles, while Smith fought through a 3-6, 6-1, 5-10 decision at No. 2.

In doubles play, Olson and Smith put together a competitive match at No. 1, finishing with a 4-6 score. Fingerhut and Jenkins competed at No. 2 doubles, while Munoz and Santos played at No. 3.

The season-opening matches provided the Gorloks with valuable competition as the team begins its fall schedule and continues to build chemistry throughout the lineup.
