Turk’s half court shot at buzzer lifts Gorloks over Hanover 51-49

(St. Louis, Mo.) – Ryan Turk knocked down a shot from half court as time expired to lift the Webster Gorloks to a 51-49 win over Hanover College on Saturday afternoon in the Help the Homeless Classic at Webster University. Turk’s three came right after Hanover’s Clint Parker hit a jumper with 2.4 left that gave the Panthers a 49-48 lead.

The Gorloks (2-0) trailed by as many as 10 in the midway through the second half before rallying late and taking a 46-45 lead with 1:28 to play. WU had a chance to extend its lead but turned it over on an inbounds play and Hanover (1-1) got fouled and hit both free throws to regain the lead 47-46 with 0:34 left. The Gorloks retook the lead 48-47 on a lay-up by Luke Niebrugge with 0:11 to go setting up the final dramatics.

It was a defensive struggle for most of the game as neither side shot the ball particularly well. After going 6-of-24 in the first half, Webster turned up the heat on the offensive end shooting 68 percent (13-of-19) in the second frame to finish at 44 percent (19-of-43). The Gorloks defense was tough holding the Panthers to 17-of-47 (36 percent) for the game and only 17 percent (3-of-18) from behind the three point stripe.
