(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season to Wisconsin-Platteville, 65-50 on Saturday afternoon in the Webster/Washington University Classic at Webster University.
The Gorloks (2-1) fell behind early before going on a 10-2 run to take a two point lead with 13:31 left in the half. After a UWP (3-0) jumper tied the game at 12, WU took its final lead of the contest on a jumper by Brad Robinson. From there it was all Pioneers as they went on a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes to stretch their lead to 10 points. Webster would cut the deficit to five and had a chance to pull closer but Curt Hanson buried a deep three as the shot clock expired to push the lead back to eight. The teams traded buckets in the final 30 seconds as Wisconsin-Platteville went into the locker room with a 34-26 lead. Ryan Turk had seven points to lead the Gorloks in the opening frame while Kyle Tetschlag had nine tallies to pace UWP.
WU scored the first three points of the second stanza to cut the deficit to five but the Pioneers ran off 14 of the next 18 points to open up a 51-33 lead with 9:26 to play. The Gorloks would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
After shooting 45 percent (9-of-20) in the first stanza WU cooled off in the second frame making only 8-of-23 (35 percent) to finish the game at 39.5 percent (17-of-43) from the floor. Webster was only 2-of-12 from behind the arc and 0-of-8 in the second half. The Gorloks turned the ball over 19 times which led to 22 Pioneer points.
Robinson led the way for WU with 14 points (10 second half) and seven boards. Turk added nine tallies and five rebounds.
