Hot shooting Devils torch Webster

During its run that saw them win four of its last five games, Webster got tough down the stretch. The Gorloks made the plays that needed to be made. They had the tables turned on them Saturday as Eureka sealed an 80-76 win at Grant Gymnasium.

It seemed like all the hustle plays were corralled by the visitors as 15 offensive rebounds and 15 second chance points would indicate. The Red Devils outscored Webster, 15-5, in second chance points. The inability to limited their opponent to one shot negated the Gorloks' solid shooting performance. Webster converted 52 percent of their shots, including 62 percent in the second half.

An 18-6 run to close the first half turned a six-point Webster lead into a six-point deficit as Eureka took the lead, and the momentum, into the break.

Webster came out of the locker room a little more focused and was able to claim a quick lead just three minutes into the second stanza. But the fortune didn't last long as EC scored 15 of the next 19 points to grab the game's first double-digit lead.

However, the Gorloks didn't go away as a senior Doug Stiegemeier lay-up with with 4:31left in the game gave Webster a one-point lead.

An offensive rebound, putback and free throw gave EC a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Sophomore Scott Restoff led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds, while senior Ryan Turk added 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior Luke Niebrugge chipped in with 15 points and six boards as Stiegemeier tallied a season-high 11 points.

Webster (6-8 overall, 3-3 SLIAC) will travel to Principia Tuesday.

Initial Comments

"It was bad. We're just not very good defensively, and it's not because we haven't worked on it. Every time we defend, our offense is better."

On defensive rebounding

"We have done a pretty good job the last couple of games. Eureka took a lot of three that caused a lot of long rebounds. But there was a lot of standing around flat footed on defense and rebounding.
