It took an unlikely source to get a much needed result as Webster earned its first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Saturday with a 79-67 win over Blackburn at Dawes Gymnasium.
With the starting five struggling with transition defense, Webster head coach Chris Bunch turned to a new fivesome to spark the Gorloks. Following a timeout in which WU trailed by eight points, the reserve five hit the boards, turned up the pressure and keyed a 15-2 spurt to give Webster the lead.
Freshman Richard Ogunsalu, in his first varsity minutes of the season, recorded two offensive rebounds in his first possession leading to a basket that sparked the run. Webster recorded 16 offensive rebounds in the game, which led to 13 second-chance points.
Sophomore Nick Jones was also apart of the reserve five that turned up the energy on the homestanding Beavers. Jones finished with career-highs with 20 points and nine-rebounds.
Despite the change in momentum during the middle portions of the first half, a three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Beavers a five-point bulge going into the break. The swings in momentum were constant throughout the game that featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes.
Following the 12th and final tie of the contest as senior Ryan Turk tallied the final eight points of a game-ending 14-2 run.
The loss snaps a four-game skid for the Gorloks.
