Gorlok fans had a fever, and a win was the only prescription. Thanks to the women's basketball team's 67-52 victory in its home opener over Dominican University (IL) on November 15, Webster ended the weekend on a happy note. Webster's first win in a season opener since 2003 picked up the spirits of Gorlok fans who had seen all three fall sports fall in NCAA first round action in predeeding days.
Tori Fenemor, a medical redshirt freshman from St. Charles HS (STL) had three consecutive layups to put Webster ahead 14-9 midway through the first half. Katy Meyer (JR, Parkway Central, STL) hit a three-pointer to put Webster up 17-11, but Dominican tied the game 23-23 at 4:00. Meyer hit another three at :04 to put Webster up 33-26 at the half.
Webster opened a 17-point lead at 56-39 with 4:50 remaining in the game, but a Dominican 7-0 run pulled it within 10. That was the closest the Stars would get as the teams traded several baskets before the Gorloks pulled away for good.
Fenemor led the Gorloks with 17 points and 10 rebounds. True freshman Maggie Zehner (Oakville HS, STL) had an impressive start, scoring 14 points, grabbing five rebounds, and handing out five assists in her debut. Meyer and Ayrica Lockett (SO, Crossroad Prep HS, ST), the leading returning scorers from last year's squad, chipped in with 14 points/9 rebounds and 7 points/7 rebounds, respectively.
Seven players new to this year's team saw action as head coach Jordan Olufson utilized his bench, with nine players seeing 10 minutes plus of playing time. One drawback to the win was a leg injury suffered by sophomore Bobbiann Auer (Glenbard East HS, IL), late in the contest.
The Gorloks head to Anderson, IN, to take on Denison University (OH) in the first round of the Anderson Tournament on November 20. Webster's next home game is its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener versus Blackburn College (IL) on December.2.
