Vikings Hold Off Gorloks, 60-50

Webster Heads To SLIAC Play At 2-2

The Webster University women's basketball team lost to Augustana College (IL), 60-50, on November 28 in Rock Island, IL.  The Gorloks spotted the Vikings a 13-point lead before making a late charge, but couldn't overcome rough shooting and turnovers that plagued them in the first half.

Ayrica Lockett (SO, Crossroads Prep, STL) had 12 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals to lead the Gorloks.  Blair Underwood (SO, Webster Groves HS, STL) added 10 points and two steals.

Webster shot 32 percent from the field for the game, including five for 22 (22 percent) from beyond the three-point line.  Foul troubles contributed to the Gorloks having a 35-17 deficit in free throw attempts for the game as well.  The Gorloks had 19 turnovers in the first half, but only three in the second half as they clawed their way back in to the game.

Three-pointers by Maggie Zehner (FR, Oakville HS, STL) and Underwood, brought the Gorloks within four, 50-46, with two minutes and 55 seconds left in the game.  Several consecutive missed shots by Webster allowed Augustana to pull back to a comfortable lead, and to seal the victory.

The Gorloks are now 2-2 on the season as they head into SLIAC play.  First up, a home date with Blackburn College on December 2 at Grant Gymnasium.  With perennial SLIAC favorite Maryville out of the equation, the race for the conference championship could prove to be a more wide open one.
