The men’s basketball team was stunned by a three-pointer at the buzzer, losing 61-60 to Maryville University in the first round of the Webster University Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament on December 11.
Webster had opened leads of thirteen points at the half, and six with two minutes left in the game, but missed free throws opened the door for the game’s dramatic ending. After
Scott Restoff (JR, Mater Dei HS, IL) hit a jumper with six seconds left to break a 58-58 tie, Maryville’s Eric Gruenefeld hit an uncontested three-pointer at the buzzer for the win.
Kevin Miller (FR, Belleville East HS, IL) had season-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior
Robby Meeh (Lindbergh HS, STL) had six points and five rebounds for the Gorloks.
Webster finds itself in a consolation match-up with Millikin University (IL) at 2 p.m. on December 12. The Gorloks defeated Millikin, 46-44, on November 24 in Decatur, IL. Millikin lost to Missouri Baptist University, 63-62, in another exciting first round game earlier in the evening. Maryville will face Missouri Baptist in the championship game at 4 p.m.
