Gorloks Skin Beavers, 81-63

Flurry of Second-Half Points Drive Win

The men’s basketball team got off to a slow start in the game, but a fast one in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, defeating Blackburn College, 81-63, at Webster University on December 2. The Gorloks scored 44 second-half points to propel them to a 1-0 start in the SLIAC.

Webster took a five-point lead early, but fell behind and didn’t regain the lead until a three-pointer by Nick Jones (Heritage HS, IL) with 3:06 in the half gave it a lead it never relinquished. The Gorloks used 52 percent shooting in the second half, and a 49-26 edge in rebounds, to muzzle the Beavers.

John Ortwerth (DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL), had a season-high 17 points and nine rebounds, and Drew Moore (Northwest HS, STL) add 16 points and nine rebounds. #Jones# had another solid effort, scoring 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

The 44 second-half points and 81 in the game were season highs for the Gorloks. A fairly large crowd was on hand to cheer their team on as the Webster Alumni Association offered free doughnuts and drinks, and the Athletic Department sponsored receptions for basketball parents, before both games.

Webster is now 3-2 on the season and head to MacMurray College (IL) on December 5. The team returns home to host a Coaches Vs. Cancer Tournament on December 11-12.  The Gorloks take on former SLIAC member Maryville University in first round action.
