WU suffers heartbreaker at Maryville

Tyler Tiemann’s three-pointer from the corner as time expired was short, and Webster fell in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play to Maryville Wednesday, 63-60.

Webster, after forcing a stop, had 20 seconds on its last possession to work for a shot. But, Josue Whitcomb was fouled on a drive eating up crucial seconds, and Luke Niebrugge’s had a missed layup and offensive rebound to give the Gorloks one final shot at a tie with three seconds left.

The loss leaves WU in a three-way tie for third with Maryville and Eureka with two games remaining. Any chance of hosting the conference tournament fell by the wayside with the defeat.

Senior Ryan Turk, who didn’t start due to an illness, finished with 17 points, while sophomore Nick Jones added 16 in the loss.

Webster will return home for their final two games of the season, hosting Greenville Saturday and Principia Tuesday.
