Four in double figures as WU beats Panthers

(Box Score)

With their backs to the wall and their postseason tournament shot in peril, the Webster came out swinging and put Greenville away with a 82-58 victory Saturday at Grant Gymnasium in St. Louis Intercollegiate action.

Four players reached double figures led by senior Ryan Turk and sophomore Scott Restoff, who scored 16 points each. Senior Tyler Tiemann added a career-high 14 points, while junior John Orthwerth contributed 10.

The Gorloks smothered their opponent from the get-go scoring 22 of the games first 28 points, including a 12-2 run that boosted the lead to 16 points (22-6) a little bit under 10 minutes into the game. Greenville showed a little fight in trimming their deficit to nine points (34-25) by scoring 11 straight points in a four minutes span late in the half. However, a WU basket would push the lead back to double figures, and the lead wouldn't get to single digits for the remainder of the game.

Webster put the game away by scoring nine consecutive points midway through the second half to push the lead to 23 points (67-44).

WU (13-11 overall, 10-5 SLIAC) will honor its seven senior prior to Tuesday's regular season finale against Principia. A Webster victory or Eureka loss would seal a spot in the SLIAC tournament.

NOTES
  • Scott Restoff snapped out of his shooting slump converting 4-of-7 from behind the arc. The sophomore guard was two of his last 19, including 12 straight before today's game. His 16 points was only three off his career-high of 19.
  • It was only our third win in 11 games in which Webster was outrebounded.
QUOTES
Head Coach Chris Bunch
Initial comments
"We have preached and preached about defense, and we have played better defense, but the game is easier when we shoot well. We were making shots, ... Scott Restoff looked real good shooting the ball."

on Scott Restoff
"He can be a very nice offensive player for us. Sometimes he struggles with confidence. We want his to take shots and look to score."

on Tyler Tieman
"It's good to see Tyler play well. He practices hard and never complains even when he is not playing as much as he likes. He always stays upbeat and positive, and it's good to see him make some shots."

on not looking past Principia
"I hope that we've learned our lesson (about not looking past any opponent). Last year, Principia was leading by five with five minutes remaining, and we had to comeback for the victory. We need to come out here Tuesday and win, really get after them."
