Frigid second half freezes Gorloks

A 10-0 run late in the second half was transformed a tie game into a 10-point deficit as Webster had its four-game winning streak snapped in losing to Eureka, 60-55, Wednesday in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

The Gorloks are 7-2 in their last nine games with both loses coming at the hands of the Red Devils. The loss also dropped Webster out of a four-way tie for second place.

In building its first half lead, WU attacked the rim and managed 16 points in the paint, while shooting 42 percent (14-of-33) from the field. Defensively, they limited the EC to just 38 percent shooting (11-of-29)

It was the exact opposite in the second half as Eureka blistered the nets for 54 percent (13-of-24) shooting, while not taking the ball to the rim. Webster made just 32 percent (9-of-28), including just 10 points in the paint.

Senior Ryan Turk scored 16 points on just 6-of-17 shooting, while junior Josue Whitcomb added 12 points. Sophomore Nick Jones pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

Webster (10-9 overall, 7-4 SLIAC) will take a break from league play Saturday when they travel to Louisville, KY and face future SLIAC member Spalding.

Initial thoughts

“I just thought they played harder than us; defended us well and got us out of sync. We took too many quick shots. We have to execute better offensively.”

On the offense

“We just had a couple of guys, not to put the blame on anyone, that usually shoots 50 percent from the field. They combined for 5-of-18 today. When you have two guys that offensively shoot a high percentage, and they have off nights, it almost too much to overcome.”
