The Webster University men’s basketball team jumped into the win column in its home opener, defeating Sewanee University (TN), 67-60, in the first round of the Cavallo Classic at Grant Gymnasium. Newcomer Willie Trimble (JR, Riverside CC, CA) dropped in 18 points against the Tigers in his Webster debut.
After entering halftime down, 29-28, the Gorloks pulled to a seven-point lead in the first three minutes of the second half, only to see it evaporate into a four-point deficit. Webster took the lead for good on a Drew Moore (SR, Northwest HS) jumper with two minutes remaining. The Gorloks outscored the Tigers 11-2 over the last five minutes of the game.
Trimble also had six assists and six rebounds in the game. Moore had 14 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Freshman Jerrod Huskey had a great debut as well, scoring 10 points on 4-4 shooting from the field, and a team-leading three steals.
The Gorloks face Nebraska Wesleyan University in second round action on November 20 at 3:00 p.m. Wesleyan downed Millikin University (IL), 74-51 in the other first round action. Sewanee will face Principia College (IL) in the final match of the Classic at 5:00 p.m.
