Webster Beats Sewanee, 59-57, in Lon Varnell Opener

The men’s basketball team picked up where it left off in the season opener as Webster defeated Sewanee University, 59-57, in the first round of the Lon Varnell Classic in TN. The Gorloks beat the Tigers in their season opener at Grant Gymnasium on November 19, 67-60.

The rematch featured numerous lead changes as both teams battled throughout the game. With the game tied with five minutes remaining, Webster clawed its way to a six point lead with 45 seconds left. Sewanee’s finally answered with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to three, but the Gorloks held on to win.

Willie Trimble (JR, Riverside CC, CA), who had a stellar first game as a Gorlok in the opener vs. Sewanee, was the leading scorer in this game as well with 15 points. Robby Meeh (SR, Lindbergh HS) had a workmanlike eight points and 10 rebounds while Scott Restoff (SR, Mater Dei HS, IL) cleaned the backboards for 14 rebounds…without scoring a point.

Webster had a large edge in rebounding, 46-27, but helped keep the Tigers in the game by only converting 10 of 23 free throw attempts on the night.

The Gorloks are 4-4 overall. Webster plays Berry College (GA) in the second round of the Lon Varnell Classic, in Sewanee, TN, on December 18. The team will have a two-week break before resuming play on January 4, at Blackburn College (IL).
