The Webster University men's basketball team decided its own fate, winning at Fontbonne University, 76-63, on February 23. The win locks up the fourth, and final, St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament spot. A Webster loss, and a Greenville win in its final contest, would have eliminated the Gorloks, but the win against Fontbonne left no room for error.
Drew Moore (Northwest HS, STL) scored a season-high 29 points to lead Webster.
Webster pulled to a 38-30 halftime lead, and the closest the Griffins could edge to the Gorloks was five points in the second half. The Gorloks sizzled at the free-throw line, converting 19 of 22 attempts, while Fontbonne converted five of only seven attempts for the game.
In addition to Moore's 29,
Scott Restoff (JR, Mater Dei HS, IL) scored a season-high 19 points, which also tied his career high as a Gorlok. Senior
Josue Whitcomb (Blue Valley West HS, KS) had a game-high eight rebounds and added 10 points.
Webster earned a first-round SLIAC tournament game vs. Westminster College on February 25 in Fulton, MO. The Gorloks lost in OT to the Bluejays in Fulton on February 10. The game was the first for Webster without leading scorer Nick Jones, lost to injury for the season. Since that loss, Webster has won three straight. In the four games since the Jones injury, Moore has averaged 22 points per game. and is now the team's leading scorer at 13.1 per game.
Webster finished 10-6 in the SLIAC and are 13-12 overall on the season. The Gorloks have qualified for the SLIAC tournament for all six years it has been held since it was reinstated in 2005. There was no tournament held from 1999 to 2004.
