Gorloks Ruin Bruin Streak, Beat Wash. U, 61-58

The Men’s basketball team won its sixth straight, as Webster defeated the two-time national champion Washington University Bears, 61-58, on January 12 at Grant Gymnasium. Willie Trimble (JR, Riverside CC, CA) sparked a Gorlok second half surge, scoring 11 points in a two-minute span, and 18 of his 22 points in the half, helping propel Webster to the win over the Bears.

Four Gorlok three-pointers, three by Trimble, fueled a 12-6 run by Webster, opening up a 53-47 lead with 8 minutes left in the game. Washington University closed to within two, 60-58, with 11 seconds remaining. But a Robby Meeh (SR, Lindbergh HS) free throw and a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer sealed the win for Webster. The Gorloks had lost six straight to the Bears, dating to 2003.

The game had a shaky start for Webster, as the Bears opened up an 14-2 lead. The Gorloks pulled even at 19-19, on back to back 3-pointers by Drew Moore (SR, Northwest HS). Moore came off the bench to score eight first half points and finished with 10, grabbing six rebounds. Meeh had five points and a team-high seven rebounds against the taller Bears.  Trimble had four assists to go with his game-high 22 points.

The Gorloks had nine three-pointers in 21 attempts for the game, and were 6 for 10 in the second half.  The Bears only managed one three-pointer for 16 attempts in the contest.  Washington University, which won NCAA III titles in 2008 and 2009, are the preseason favorite to win its conference, the University Athletic Association.

Webster is 9-4 overall. The six-game win streak is the team’s longest since it won 15 in a row during the 2007-08 season. The Gorloks travel to Louisville, KY, on January 15 to face Spalding University, then return home on January 19 to play Westminster College.
