The Webster University women’s basketball defeated Fontbonne University, 47-45, as Megan Willett (JR, Parkway West HS) scored the winning basket with 2 seconds left in the contest. The victory at Grant Gymnasium, on January 8, improved Webster’s record in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to 4-1.
After both teams traded baskets and leads throughout the second half, Webster inbounded the ball with 11 seconds remaining, after a pair of Fontbonne missed free throws, and the game tied at 45-45. Katy Meyer (SR, Parkway Central HS) found Willett open, streaking to the lane, as she electrified the crowd with the game winning layup.
Meyer finished with 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Webster in both categories. Maggie Zehner (SO, Oakville HS), returning to the lineup after missing four games with an injury, scored 10 points for the Gorloks.
It was a game no one seemed to want to score in early on, as only three baskets and 11 points total were scored in the first 10 minutes of play. Both teams combined for a scant 10 of 56 from the field in the first half. Two late 3-pointers by Airyn Miller (SO, Belleville West HS, IL) and Katy Meyer (SR, Parkway Central HS) pulled Webster to a one-point halftime deficit, 18-17, after trailing by eight. Webster came back to shoot 47% in the second.
Webster is 9-5 overall on the season. The Gorloks take a week off before travelling to Louisville, KY, to face Spalding University.
