The Webster University men’s basketball team slept walked through the first half, woke up in time to mount a furious comeback, but still fell to Blackburn College, 74-71 at Grant Gymnasium on February 9. Poor free throw shooting in the second half kept the Gorloks from completing a remarkable comeback. Coming to an end was Webster's 12-game winning streak, the second longest in team history.
The Beavers wasted no time in building up a 23-7 lead, on the heels of a 17-0 run. The halftime deficit was 17 for the Gorloks, and despite some hints of taking control, still trailed by 11 with 5:18 remaining. Webster came to life and began to cut the lead. A steal by Cody Bradfisch (SO, Jerseyville HS, IL) and subsequent foul by Blackburn, led to him sinking two free throws at 1:25, to bring the Gorloks within one.
Another free throw by Bradfisch with 42 seconds left, tied the game at 71-71, but a Chris Williams jumper for Blackburn gave the Beavers their final lead. Williams scored 32 points in the contest, the most points by an individual against Webster on the season. The Gorloks were only able to convert 11 of 19 free throws in the second half.
Bradfisch finished with 21 points on the night, including five for eight on three-point attempts. Willie Trimble (JR, Riverside CC, CA) and Drew Moore (SR, Northwest HS) each had 16 points for Webster. Moore had a team-high eight rebounds and had three blocks in the game. Webster was without the services of senior forward Nick Jones (Heritage HS, IL) who sat out with an injury.
The Gorloks fell to 10-2 in the SLIAC and into a first-place tie with Spalding University (KY), who will visit Webster on February 11. Spalding is not eligible for SLIAC post-season tournament play, but can compete for the regular season title. Webster is 15-5 overall and takes to the road on February 16 for a game at Westminster College, who sits in third place in the SLIAC.
