Men's Tennis Makes Lot of Racquet in Opener

The Webster University men's tennis team, coming off a record-breaking 2010 season, got off to a flying start in 2011 by defeating Illinois College, 8-1, in Elsah, IL, on March 2.  The team hopes to repeat the success of last season when it won a record high 12 matches and finished in second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The second place finish was its highest in SLIAC competition.

Starting in the win column for the Gorloks in the singles were; Agustin Villalba (SO, American School of Quito) at #1, Diego Alarcon (SO, American School of Quito) at #2, and Zach Papes (SR, McCluer North HS) at #3,   Finishing up the sweep in singles was Adis Beganovic (SR, St, John the Baptist HS, Bosnia) at #4, Ryan Fassler (JR, Lutheran South HS) at #5, and Josh Sellmeyer (SO, Mehlville HS) at #6.

Beganovic and Villalba took the #2 doubles, and Wakeel Rahman (SO, Pattonville HS) and Dustin Thode (SO, Crystal City HS, MO) won in the #3 spot.  The Gorloks lone set back was a cliffhanger in the #1 doubles as Papes and Alarcon lost.

The men are back in action on March 5 vs. Fontbonne University and Principia College (IL) at the Webster Groves Tennis Center at 1-44 & Elm Avenue.  Webster plays the Griffins at 9:00 a.m. and follows up with the Panthers at 1:00 p.m.
