Mixing large freshmen classes with rosters stocked with veteran talent, the men's and women's tennis teams defeated Maryville University on September 8 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center as both Webster squads won by identical 7-2 scores.
The women's tennis team has added six freshmen; two from California, and one from Arizona, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas. They join seniors Allison and Paige Tungate (Flora HS, IL) and Kate Coen (Rockwood Summit HS), and junior Lindsey Hays (Francis Howell HS). Against the Saints, freshmen Isabella Espinoza (Temecula HS, CA), Lauren Hacker (Corona Del Sol HS, AZ), and Marissa Lewis (Owasso HS, OK) picked up singles wins and Sandra Gutierrez (Kaiser HS, CA) won in doubles.
Adding five freshmen of its own, the men's tennis team saw two of them pick up wins at doubles against Maryville. Zach Green (Bonneville HS, IN) and Josh Papes (McCluer North HS) both had their first collegiate wins. In addition, one transfer and one former Webster player, Alex Magrath (JR, University City HS) join eight returnees. Magrath played in 2008 for Webster and has rejoined the team after a three-season hiatus. Magrath picked up a win in the #3 singles in his return.
Maryville, a former member of the St. Louis Intecollegiate Athletic Conference, is an NCAA II member. Both Webster teams will return to action on September 20 vs. Missouri Baptist University, at the Webster Groves Tennis Center. Webster's men are playing a five match fall schedule to help prepare them for the spring championships season. Webster's women have scheduled nine matches for this fall.
