Box Score Running its record to 3-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Webster University men’s basketball team defeated Spalding University (KY), 67-62, on January 7, at Grant Gymnasium. Once again the Gorloks victory was paced by an offense with scoring distributed throughout the lineup.
Dietrick Sooter (JR, Pierce City HS, MO) hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining in the game to lock up the victory. Webster went on a 13-0 run at the 12:00 mark in the second to break a 41-41 tie. A Sooter three-pointer, off a Cody Bradfisch (JR, Jerseyville HS, IL) steal with four minutes left in the contest, gave Webster a 10-point lead. But the Golden Eagles clawed back in the contest, cutting the lead to two before missing a three with six seconds left.
Stefan Whittingham (SO, Ft. Lauderdale HS, FL) had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, plus three assists and two steals. Sooter's 13 points led the Gorloks, and Hollis Edwards (SO, McGavock HS, TN) had 10 points while Bradfisch and Jarrod Huskey (SO, Hillsboro HS, MO) each had nine.
The Gorloks shot a robust 19-21 at the free throw line (91%) for the game, increasing their season average from 61.6% to 64.3% in the process. The team's three-point shooting (6-17, 35.3%) was also one of their better efforts on the year, with Bradfisch going three for six from beyond the arc.
Webster is 3-8 overall. The Gorloks travel to Eureka College (IL) on January 10 to face the Red Devils, before returning home on January 12 to play MacMurray College (IL) at Grant.
