Cincinnati Christian Edges Webster, 82-78

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team lost to Cincinnati Christian University (OH), 82-78, in the first round of the Blue and Gold Classic in Louisville, KY, on November 23.    In a nip and tuck affair, the Gorloks fell behind 22-21, with eight minutes left in the first half, and never regained the lead, despite being tied with just over three minutes left in the game.

Roman Robinson (SR, Merritt CC, CA) had 13 points, seven rebounds, and three steals on the evening.  Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) led Webster with 14 points.  Aaron Griffin (SO, Rust College, MS) had 10 points and five rebounds in only 16 minutes of play.  Danny Zehner (SO, Oakville HS, MO) had 12 points on 5-7 shooting, and Lawrence Williams (SO, Kirkwood HS, MO) had six points, going 3-3 from the field, and three rebounds, off the bench.

Both teams battled it out to start, with neither team having a bigger lead than three in the game's first 14 minutes.  The Eagles pulled to a seven point lead with four minutes left in the first, but the Gorloks battled back to head into the locker room down by one.

In the second half, the Eagles took an eight point-lead twice, only to have Webster battle back within two, and then tying it up at 67-67 with 3:24 remaining.  A basket and a free throw by the Eagles a few seconds later, put them up for good.  Cincinnati Christian held a 20-6 advantage at the free throw line as Webster had seven more buckets in the contest, and won the rebounding battle, 30-26, including a 17-7 edge on the offensive boards.

Cincinnati Christian is an NAIA program as is Webster's next opponent in the Classic.  The Gorloks take on another flock of Eagles, Asbury College (KY), in the second round on November 24.  Webster returns home on November 28, to start St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as they face Blackburn College (IL) at Grant Gym.
