Box Score Playing inspired ball on Senior Night, the Webster University women’s basketball team grounded the Fontbonne University Griffins, 71-61, on February 21, at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks opened a four-point halftime lead and extended the lead to 21 in the second, as a normally intense affair turned into a rout. Seven Webster seniors played their final home game and several of them made their last appearances memorable ones.
Leading the senior charge was Tori Fenemor (St. Charles HS), who pulled the unbelievable feat of scoring a career high 18 points, and grabbing a career high 13 rebounds, in her final home game. Loren Douglass (Marquette HS) made her last home game an impressive one also, scoring nine points and picking up eight rebounds before fouling out.
Five other seniors wore the Gorlok at home for a final time. Tyeila Gant (Lee’s Summit Christian HS, MO), started and had six points and three rebounds, and Megan Willett (Parkway West HS) had nine rebounds, three points, and three assists. Blaire Underwood (Webster Groves) started also and made her final home appearance. Barissa Ford (Clayton HS) and Amanda Arcangel (Immaculate Heart HS, CA) were limited by injuries but still able to take the floor.
Webster grabbed an eye-popping 61 rebounds for the contest, the most since the team had 61 in a contest vs. Maryville University on January 14, 2009. The Gorloks also had eight blocks in the game, five by Cassie Endicott (FR, Civic Memorial HS, IL) before she fouled out. The Gorloks hope the contest will create momentum for the SLIAC tournament.
Webster finished 10-6 in the SLIAC and is 12-13 overall on the season. The Gorloks travel to Westminster College on February 24 to face the Blue Jays in the first round of the SLIAC tournament. A win would send the Gorloks to the championship, in Fulton also, on February 25.
