Tennis Teams Continue Winning Ways

The Webster University men’s and women’s tennis teams continued their fine 2011-12 seasons as both teams defeated Lindenwood University-Belleville (IL), and the men downed Dominican University (IL) also.  The women defeated the Lynx, 9-0, as the men slipped by them, 6-3.  The men then defeated Dominican University (IL), 8-1, in a match much more exciting than the score indicated.  All matches took place at the Webster Groves Tennis Center, on March 3.

Against Dominican for the men, Francissco Cortez (JR, Quincy HS, IL) was down 3-8 and 5-9 before winning the tie breaker, 11-9, and taking the #1 singles match.  In the #2 singles position, Ricky Eaves (JR, McCluer North HS) came back in the tie-breaker as well, to defeat a tough Dominican opponent.

Cortez and Diego Alarcon (JR, American School, Ecuador), similarly, were down 0-5 to Dominican’s  #1 doubles team, only to win eight straight games and take the match, 8-5.

To complete the comebacks against Dominican, Josh Sellmeyer (JR, Mehlville HS) and Dustin Thode (JR, Crystal City HS, MO) came from 2-5 down to take the #3 singles in a tie-breaker, 9-8.  Sellmeyer went 4-0 on the day, winning his #4 singles match vs Dominican as well, and winning singles and double vs. Lindenwood-Belleville.

The men face Fontbonne University at the WGTC on March 7, then have two weeks off before travelling to Westminster College on March 22.  The Webster women face Stephens College and Fontbonne University at the WGTC on March 10.
