Men’s Tennis Falls Short In Indiana

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Webster University men's tennis team competed in three matches over the weekend against Franklin College, Trine University, and Adrian College at Franklin College. The Gorloks faced great competition in all three matches and dropped all three matches.  

Match #1: Webster 1, Franklin 6
In the first match of the weekend, the Gorloks and Grizzlies opened the match with doubles competition and won one match. In the number one doubles match, the team of Eli Bartek and Jack Forlenza battled their opponents closely and won the match with a 6-4 victory. 

In the second doubles match, Griffin Olson and Tyler Gonzales paired up and won four sets but fell by the score of 4-6. In the third doubles match, Shawn Smith and Robin Wong (season debut) played for the first time as collegiate tennis players and captured four sets but dropped the match by the score of 4-6. 

In singles play, Bartek lined up against Marcus Cox in the number one singles match and battled Cox closely to the score of 4-6 when Bartek had to retire from the match. In the second singles match, Olson was tasked against Clark Hersam as Olson won five sets but fell by the scores of 6-3 and 6-2.

Forlenza faced off against Jaden Wells in the number three singles match as both student-athletes went back-and-forth for the majority of the match. In the opening set, Forlenza and Wells battled closely but Wells won by the score of 6-4. In the second set, Forlenza responded with a 6-4 victory that forced another set. In the final set, Forlenza battled but fell late by the score of 5-10. 

In the fourth singles match, Gonzales lined up against Brian Vennemann as both student-athletes opened the match trading shots to a tie at six apiece that forced a tiebreaker set. In the tiebreaker set, Gonzales earned one point but fell by the score of 1-10. In the second set, Gonzales fell behind and dropped the match by the score of 2-6. 

Smith was tasked against Shay Kyser in the number five match and opened the match with a 6-2 victory. In the second set, Smith got down early but won two sets but fell by the score of 2-6 that forced a third set. In the third set, both student-athletes battled back-and-forth to a tie at nine apiece. Forlenza buckled down and closed out the set with the final two points that earned the 11-9 victory. 

Wong, who made his collegiate tennis and Webster debut, played against Raymond Richard in the sixth singles match and Wong won one set but dropped the match by the scores of 0-6 and 1-6. 


Match #2: Webster 0, Trine 7
In the second match of the day on Saturday, the Gorloks played a very talented team in Trine and won one doubles match. In the number one doubles match, Bartek and Forlenza went back-and-forth against their opponents as the duo came through late and won the match by the score of 7-5. 

In the number two doubles match, Olson and Gonzales paired up again and captured two set victories but fell by the score of 2-6. In the final doubles match of the day, Smith and Wong teamed up for the second time for the day and continued to learn from each other but fell by the score of 0-6. 

In singles play, the Gorloks fought hard but dropped all six matches. In the number one singles match, Bartek lined up against Drew Hackney and competed hard but fell by the identical scores of 2-6. In the second singles match, Olson faced off against Andrew Spirrison and won two sets but fell by the scores of 1-6. Forlenza was tasked against Emmett Wirth in the number three match as Forlenza fought hard but dropped the match by the identical scores of 2-6. 

In the number four singles match, Gonzales lined up against Leyton Byler and battled closely in the first set but fell by the score of 4-6. In the second set, Gonzales secured two sets but dropped the match by the score of 2-6. Smith played against Asher Monson in the fifth spot and won one set but dropped the match by the scores of 1-6 and 0-6. In the sixth singles match, Wong was tasked against Landon Bassett and played hard but fell in straight sets.  


Match #3: Webster 0, Adrian 7
The Gorloks closed out the weekend trip with a match against Adrian on Sunday. The Gorloks and Bulldogs opened the match with doubles competitions. In the number one match, Bartek and Forlenza battled through three sets but the team had to retire from the match due to injury. 

In the number two doubles match, Olson and Gonzales teamed up once again and captured three set victories but fell by the score of 3-6. Smith and Wong closed out doubles play and secured two sets but dropped the match by the score of 2-6. 

In singles play, the Gorloks fought hard but fell in all matches. In the number one singles match, Olson lined up against Michael Mascarin and won three sets but fell by the scores of 1-6 and 2-6. In the number two match, Forlenza faced off against Will Westberry as both student-athletes battled back-and-forth for the entire match. In the opening set, Forlenza conquered four sets but fell by the score of 4-6. In the second set, he responded with a 6-4 victory that forced a third set. In the third set, Forlenza won four points but fell by the score of 4-10. 

Gonzales played against Luke Holowinski in the number three match and won five sets but fell by the scores of 3-6 and 2-6. In the number four singles match, Smith was tasked against Sean Ruhf and captured four sets but dropped the match the scores of 1-6 and 3-6.  In the final singles match of the weekend, Wong lined up against Jaxon Nejedlik and won three sets but fell by the scores of 1-6 and 2-6. 

The Gorloks will continue their fall season on Sunday, September 14 hosting Westminster College for a dual match starting at 9:00PM in Webster Groves, Missouri.
