The Webster University men's and women's tennis squads both defeated Fontbonne University by identical 9-0 scores at the Webster Groves Tennis Center on March 7. The wins put both teams at 1-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as they begin their quests to win a SLIAC Tournament Championship and capture an NCAA III berth.
Francissco Cortez (JR, Quincy HS, IL), fresh off a SLIAC Player of the Week nod, kept his record as a Gorlok perfect, winning both at #1 singles, and with Diego Alarcon (JR, American School, Ecuador) won in doubles. Cortez is now 4-0 in both singles and doubles after joining the team this semester. Alarcon improved to 7-1 in singles, winning at #2, and 5-2 in doubles, on the year.
Ricky Eaves (JR, McCluer North HS) improved to 6-1 in doubles after his win with Josh Sellmeyer (JR, Mehlville HS), and 6-2 in singles, winning at #3. Sellmeyer is having quite a season himself, improving to 6-0 in singles after his victory in the #4 slot, and 4-0 in doubles after pairing with Eaves at #2.
For the women, Paige Tungate (SR, Flora HS, IL) and Marissa Lewis (FR, Owasso HS, OK) upped their season singles records to 9-1. Tungate won at the #1 singles and Lewis had an easy time at #3. Sister Allison Tungate (GR, Flora HS, IL) teamed up with sister Paige to win the #1 doubles and improved to 8-1 in doubles on the year. With her win at #2 singles, Allison is now 8-2. Freshman MacKenzie Wilder picked up a win at the #5 singles to go to 4-1.
The men are 8-1 on the season and the women are 9-1. The women will face Stephens College at the WGTC on March 10, then both squads head to Fulton, MO, on March 22 to take on Westmister College. Full results were:
