The Webster University men's tennis team set a single season record for wins with 14, as they defeated Greenville College, 7-2. The victory came in the 3rd Place match in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, on April 21, at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.
The Gorloks jumped ahead, 3-0, in the match, sweeping the doubles. After winning the first two completed singles, the contest was declared a win for Webster but the teams agreed to finish the remaining individual matches.
In addition to an outstanding season for the team, several individuals had memorable performances for the year as well. Josh Sellmeyer (JR, Mehlville HS) had a perfect season at singles, going 13-0, and was 12-2 in doubles.
Diego Alarcon (JR, American School, Ecuador) anchored the #1 singles, going 10-3 in that position and 13-3 overall.
Ricky Eaves (JR, McCluer North HS) continues to build on his solid career as a Gorlok, going 12-4 in singles and 13-3 in doubles. Francissco Cortez (JR, Quincy HS, IL) joined the team in the spring semester and built a 10-1 record in singles, with nine of the wins coming at either #1 or #2. Freshman Josh Papes (McCluer North HS) was 10-4 in doubles for his first season.
The squad had no seniors and will have the whole team returning in 2012-13.
