Webster Comeback Shocks Westminster, 66-65

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team rallied to defeat Westminster College, 66-65, on January 15, in Fulton, MO.  The Gorloks fell behind by 10 at the half, scraped to within six with two minutes left , and pulled out the win with a three-pointer by Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) with six seconds remaining.  The win was preserved when a last second shot by the Blue Jays to win was blocked by Jarrod Huskey (JR, Hillsboro HS, MO).

The victory broke a seven-game skid by Webster, its longest since the 1996-97 season, and presto...the Gorloks find themselves in the hunt for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament spot.

It wasn't looking good for Webster as it fell behind, 43-33, at the half.  The Gorloks were 5-10 from beyond the arc in the first, but the Blue Jays popped six three-pointers themselves and were 10-14 from within two-point range.  Webster trailed by 13 at one point in the second half, and still trailed by 10 with 10 minutes left when the Gorloks made their move.

A steal by Smith and a layup by Danny Zehner (SO, Oakville HS, MO), followed by a jumper by Huskey, made it 59-53 with 7:19 on the clock.  The Blue Jays still led by six when a layup by Huskey cut the lead to four, 63-59, with 2:11 remaining.  A steal and a layup by Smith with :50 left tied the game, 63-63.  A Westminster jumper to put them back out in front with :22 left in the contest set the stage for Smith's and Huskey's heroics in the final seconds.

Roman Robinson (SR, Angelo Rodriguez HS, CA) led Webster with 19 points.  Smith wound up with 12 points and a team-high three steals.  Huskey had 10 points, shooting 5-8, and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Gorloks are 3-3 in the SLIAC and 5-9 overall.  Webster is home on January 17 as the team renews its "Battle of Big Bend:" with Fontbonne University at Grant Gym.  The Gorloks hit the road again on January 19 as they travel to Elsah, IL, to take on Principia College.
