Webster Men Win 5th Straight, 75-68, Over Eureka

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team won its fifth straight, a 75-68 win over Eureka College (IL), on January 26, at Grant Gymnasium.  With the victory, Webster moves into a three-way tie for second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, at 7-3.  The Gorloks also reached the .500 level for the season at 9-9.

After Webster and Eureka traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Gorloks opened up a 58-51 lead on a Roman Robinson (SR, Angelo Rodriguez HS, CA) dunk with 7:10 on the clock.  The Red Devils couldn't make any headway for the remainder of the contest as the Gorloks maintained their lead.

The teams had headed into the break tied at 35-35.  The scored pretty much reflected the stats for the first half.  Eureka outshot Webster, 55% to 45%, but the Gorloks shot 46% from beyond the 3-point line to the Red Devil's 36%.  Eureka outrebounded Webster, 16-14, but Webster only commited four turnovers to Eureka's seven.  But Webster turned up the heat in the second half, adding eight steals and winding up the game with 24 points off 18 Eureka turnovers.  The Gorloks also limited the Red Devils to 32% shooting from the field in the period, shooting 48% themselves.

Danny Zehner (SO, Oakville HS, MO) tied for the Webster lead with 14 points, shooting 4-7 from the field, including 3-4 from the three-point line.  Cody Bradfisch (SR, Jerseyville HS, IL) also had 14 points, coming off the bench for the Gorloks.  Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) had 13 points, five rebounds, and team-highs in steals (5) and assists (5).  Jarrod Huskey (JR, Hillsboro HS, MO) also had 13 points for Webster.

With the victory, the Gorloks atoned for an earlier 72-64 loss at Eureka.  This was the first of five straight home games for the Gorloks.  Westminster College visits Grant Gymnasium on  January 30, and Webster will host Greenville College on Hall of Fame day, February 2.
