Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team suffered its first defeat on the year, falling 70-67 in overtime to Aurora University (Ill.), on November 26, at Grant Gymnasium. Webster tied the game late in regulation, but fell in the extra session for its first loss of the young season.
A Courtney Pursley (SR, Lonedell, Mo./St. Clair HS) layup, off a Spartan turnover, gave Webster its first lead of the second half at 60-59, with 42 seconds remaining. After Aurora tied it up, Webster missed a last second chance to win the game in regulation.
A pair of free-throws and a 10-foot jumper by Cassie Endicott (JR, Bethalto, Ill/Civic Memorial HS) gave Webster a 65-64 lead with 2:35 left in the overtime session. Aurora responded with a pair of layups to take a 68-65 lead with 59 seconds left. Two free-throws with: 47 left by Pursley cut the margin to one but two Spartan free-throws with: 12 remaining made it 70-67.
Pursley led Webster with 21 points and tied for the team lead with nine rebounds. Endicott finished with 19 points and tied Pursley with nine rebounds. Brittany Harris-Conway (SO, St. James, Mo./John F. Hodge HS) had 15 points on 5-7 shooting from the field. Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba, Mo./Cuba HS) had six assists and five steals in the game.
After a low-scoring first half, Webster trailed, 27-21. The Gorloks led most of the way in the half but back to back three-pointers by the Spartans gave them their first lead, 23-17, with 4:30 left. Aurora maintained its edge the rest of the half.
Webster is 2-1 for the season. The Gorloks travel to Rock Island, Ill, on November 30, to take on Augustana College. Webster is back home on December 4 to open play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, vs. Greenville College at Grant Gymnasium.
