Griffin Basket in Return Caps Comeback, 68-67

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team completed a come-from-behind victory as junior Aaron Griffin (Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS) sank a basket with four seconds left to lift the Gorloks to a 68-67 win over Monmouth College.

Griffin, a 6'6 center, rebounded a missed Webster shot and laid in the game winner.  Griffin, who averaged 10 points and nine rebounds for the Gorloks in 2012-13, was playing his first game of the season after missing the first eight contests due to a leg injury.

Webster fell behind, 46-31, at the half and was still behind by 13, 63-50, with 4:00 left in the contest.  A basket and one by Kevin Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS)) started a 12-0 Gorlok run to make it 63-62 at 1:36.

Four straight free throws by the Fighting Scots, aided by a technical, put Monmouth back out in front by five, 67-62, with 1:21 remaining.  A basket and two free throws brought Webster back within one of the lead with :37 on the clock.

A shot by Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) for the lead missed its mark before Griffin made his grab and the basket for the victory.  Webster got beat on the boards for the night 40-31, but had only 13 turnovers to Monmouth's 23, and the Gorloks nailed 25 free throws to the Scots 15.

Miller wound up with 16 points and nine rebounds, both team-highs, and Smith had 13 points.  Senior guard Hollis Edwards (Nashville, TN/McGavock HS) had eight points and a team-high five assists.  Adam Etter (FR, Albers, IL/Mater Dei HS) had 11 points in the win and Griffin wound up with eight points and four rebounds in limited action.

The Gorloks are 5-4 overall after the win.   Webster has a two-week holiday break before beginning the new year, on January 4, 2014, with a game at Washington University.
