Webster Men Need OT to Down Greenville, 81-76

Box Score The Webster University men’s basketball team kept pace in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference race with an 81-76 overtime win over Greenville College (IL) at home on February 2.  Webster is 8-4 in the SLIAC with the victory and holds onto fourth place in the conference.

A Roman Robinson (SR, Angelo Rodriguez HS, CA) rebound and layup with 1:10 left in regulation put Webster up, 64-62.  Hollis Edwards (JR, McGavock HS, TN) and Cody Bradfisch (SR, Jerseyville HS, IL) each hit two free  throws in the game’s final seconds to put Webster ahead, 68-65, but a Greenville three-pointer at the buzzer sent the game into OT at 68-68.

In the overtime session, two three-pointers by Smith and two baskets by Robinson helped Webster build a 79-74 lead with 50 seconds left.   A Greenville layup with: 24 on the clock closed the score to 79-76, but Webster held on for the win.  The game had a much different ending than in the Gorloks' 91-61 win at Greenville on December 1.

The Gorloks sprinted to a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest.  They built the lead to 26-10 before a Greenville 4- point play, off a three-pointer and foul, halted the advance.  Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) had 15 points in the first 12 minutes of the game, including 3-3 for the three-point line.  He finished with 17 for the half.

Things got a little sloppy in the second half for Webster as turnovers and cold shooting let the Panthers crawl back into the game, trailing only 50-49, after outscoring the Gorloks 21-6 in the first ten minutes.   The teams exchanged baskets over the next eight minutes and the score tied, 62-62, with 2:00 left in the game.

Smith led all scorers with 29 points for the game.  Robinson finished with 18 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and four blocks on the night.  Bradfisch had 14 points in the game.  Webster is back to .500 at 10-10 overal on the season.

Three new members were inducted into the Webster University Athletics Hall of Fame at halftime of the men's game.  Angie Carr (women's basketball), Crystal Shelton Spinner (volleyball), and Marty Todt (men's soccer) were honored.

Webster still has two games remaining on this five-game home stretch.  The Gorloks host Principia College (IL) on February 5, and finish up their regular season home schedule with a contest vs. Spalding University (KY) on February 7.
