The Webster University men's tennis team improved to 3-1 on the young season with an 8-1 win over Franklin College on Feb. 16, and a 7-2 win over host Rose-Hulman Institute on Feb. 17, both in Terre Haute, IN. Ricky Eaves (SR, McCluer North HS, MO) remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 4-0 in both doubles and singles after posting wins in each for both matches.
The Gorloks swept the doubles vs. Franklin, and took five of six in the singles. In the 7-2 win vs. Rose-Hulman, Webster lost at #1 doubles and singles, but managed to sweep the other seven matches for the victory.
Against Franklin, Eaves won 8-4 in doubles with partner Travis Blair (FR, Jerseyville HS, IL) and posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at the #4 position in singles. Eaves partnered with Josh Papes (SO, McCluer North HS, MO) for a hard-fought 9-7 win against Rose-Hulman. He had an even tougher battle in his singles match at #4, winning 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), and 11-9 in the tie-breaker set.
The matches saw the season's first action for Francissco Cortez (SR, Quincy HS, IL) who won at #1 doubles with Agustin Villalba (SR, American School, Ecuador), and 7-5, 6-3, at #2 singles vs Franklin.
The next match for the team will be on February 20 at home vs. Maryville University. The match is tentatively scheduled at the Webster Groves Tennis Center, weather permitting. The full results for the Franklin and Rose-Hulman matches are listed below:
