The Webster University men's tennis team had never defeated Westminster College before, making the Blue Jays its 12th straight victim, 5-4, on March 23 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center. The Gorloks had defeated Eureka College (IL) for their 11th straight win earlier in the day. The two wins start Webster out at 2-0 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
What made the Gorloks' first win over Westminster even more significant is that the Blue Jays have won the SLIAC tournament 11 of the last 13 years. For Webster to gain its first SLIAC title and NCAA berth, they are going to have to displace the Blue Jays.
The Gorloks grabbed an edge in the match by winning two of three doubles to start, but had to slug it out through the six singles to win. Webster and Westminster had split the first the #1-4 singles, leaving the Gorloks with a 4-3 lead with the outcome of the #5-6 singles still to go. When Ricky Eaves (SR, McCluer North HS, MO) won 6-0, 6-3, at #6, it gave Webster a 5-3 lead and the match.
Webster is 12-1 overall and its next scheduled match is on March 26 vs. Missouri Baptist University at the WGTC. On March 28, the team travels to Lindenwood University-Belleville.
