Gorloks Can't Hold Off Highlanders, 67-62

Box Score In a battle for first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Webster University men's basketball team came up short, falling 67-62 at MacMurray College on January 25.  The Gorloks led for most of the contest but the Highlanders pulled ahead late in the second half to take the victory.

With the loss, the Gorloks fall to 7-2 in the SLIAC and MacMurray improves to 8-1.  Spalding University (KY), who Webster handed its first SLIAC loss to earlier this week, holds onto the top spot at 9-1.

Webster took a 26-15 lead early in the first half and led at the intermission, 32-29.  The teams exchanged leads down the stretch and after MacMurray had back to back layups to go up 58-55 with 3:20 remaining, the Highlanders hung on for the win.
Webster's top scoring tandem led the way for the Gorloks.  Guard Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) led Webster in scoring with 17 points.  Center Kevin Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS) had 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Gorloks lost the battle of the boards, 33-25, with the Highlanders pulling down 12 offensive rebounds to Webster's eight.  Webster shot a respectable 46% (22-48) from the field and an excellent 88% (15-17) from the free throw line, but it still wasn't enough to carry the day.

The contest was the SLIAC's pick as conference Game of the Week, and the battle didn't disappoint.

Webster hits the road on January 29, travelling to Carlinville, IL, to face the Blackburn Beavers.  The Gorloks are home on February 1 as they host newest SLIAC member, Iowa Wesleyan College.
