Box Score Led by four three-pointers by Hunter Ward, the Webster University men's basketball team defeated Millikin University, 81-68, on November 21. The Gorlok victory came in the opening round of the Cavallo Classic at Grant Gymnasium.
Ward (SO, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) led a Webster comeback over the game's final six minutes, finishing with a double double on the night. Ward had a team-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 8-13 from the field, including 4 of 6 three-point attempts.
Millikin had made up an eleven-point deficit in the first half and then took a six-point lead in the second. A Ward three put Webster back in front, 62-60, with 5:25 remaining. It was the first of four straight three-point attempts he would connect on. A steal by Adam Etter (SO, Albers, IL/Mater Dei HS) and a layup by Ahmad Smith (SR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) made it 64-60.
Ward made it 67-62 with his second bomb at 4:00 and another, at the 3:00 mark, made it 73-65 Webster. His fourth straight extended the lead to 78-65 with 1:50 on the clock and the Big Blue was sunk.
Webster had jumped out to a 22-11 lead in the first half, but Millikin had whittled it down to 28-26 at the half, finishing with a 15-6 run.
Smith had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Etter led Webster with five assists and four steals…chipping in with eight points as well. Aaron Griffin (JR, Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS) made a strong season debut, scoring 13 points, grabbing six boards, and blocking two shots. Griffin missed the season's first two games as he nursed an injury.
The Gorloks shot 64% from the field in the second half, and 55% on the evening. Webster held Millikin to 38% shooting for the contest. Webster out rebounded Millikin, 40-32, for the game.
The Gorloks are 2-1 overall on the young season and face the University of Texas-Dallas in the second round of the Cavallo Classic on November 22. The Comets beat MacMurray College, 86-81, in the other first round match up. Webster is back home on November 25 to open play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a game vs. MacMurray.
