Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team opened up the 2014-15 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with an 82-60 win over MacMurray College, on November 25, at Grant Gymnasium. Ahmad Smith and Hunter Ward teamed up to lead the Gorloks to victory.
Webster, the unanimous pre-season favorite as voted on by other coaches in the conference, start the season 1-0 in the SLIAC and improve to 3-2 overall.
Webster grabbed a 15-point advantage in the game's first 10 minutes, taking a 32-17 lead. Smith (SR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) fueled the charge, scoring nine points on three of three shooting beyond the three-point line.
Smith wound up with 16 points in the first half, along with four rebounds and three assists, as the Gorloks entered the locker room up, 48-27. As a team, Webster shot 7-11 (63.6%) from the beyond the arc in the half. The Gorloks would shoot 31-54 (57.4%) from the field for the contest, and 10-16 (62.5) from the three-point line.
Ward's (SO, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) three straight 3-pointers built a 67-38 Webster lead with 10:00 left in the game. Eleven second half points gave Ward 16 on the night, and his second double double in the last three games, as he also had 10 rebounds for the game to repeat the feat. Ward was 6-9 on the evening, including 4-5 from the three-point line. Ward also had a team-high four steals.
Smith finished the night with 21 points on 8-14 shooting, including 4-6 from the three-point line, and five assists. C.J. Moore (SO, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) had 11 points and a team high six assists. Adam Etter (SO, Albers, IL/Mater Dei HS) had eight points and five assists in the game.
The Gorloks will travel to Dubuque, IA, over the Thanksgiving weekend, to play Loras College. Webster travels to Fulton, MO, on December 3 to take on Westminster College.
