Gorloks Tame Tigers, 71-51

Win Moves Webster Into 2nd Place Tie in SLIAC

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team moved into a tie for second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with a 71-51 win over Iowa Wesleyan College on February 10, at Grant Gymnasium.   The Gorloks improve to 11-2 in the SLIAC, with a win that was a tale of two halves.

The Gorloks needed a second half comeback for the victory.  An 11-0 run out of the chute gave Webster a 42-32 lead.  Webster extended the lead to 57-41 with 6:40 remaining in the game and coasted home to victory.  Webster shot 50% (26-52) for the contest, but was particularly hot in the second half, hitting 65.2% (15-23) of its attempts.

Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) once again led the Gorloks in scoring, finishing with 19 for the game, and going 8-15 from the field.  Smith also tied for the team lead in assists with four.  Kevin Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS) powered up for 17 points and shared the team-lead with eight rebounds.  Aaron Griffin (JR, Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS) had 10 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots, and a dunk on the evening.

Guard Hollis Edwards (SR, Nashville, TN/McGavock HS) had four steals on the night, bringing his season total to 58 and his career total to 169.  Edwards is now one short of the Webster career record of 170 set by Hall of Famer Dan Thoman from 1987-91.

After a sluggish start to the game by the Gorloks, a Hunter Ward (FR, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) dunk on a breakaway gave Webster its first lead, 14-12, at the 11:40 mark.  But the Tigers continued to battle and ended the half with a 32-31 lead.  Wesleyan shot 6-11 from the three-point line in the first, including a trey with three seconds left in the half, to give itself the lead.

The Gorloks are 14-6 overall.  The team hits the road for a contest at Greenville College (IL) on February 12 and then has a showdown on February 15 in Louisville, KY, against first place Spalding University.  The Golden Eagles are 13-1 in the SLIAC.
