Gorlok Victory Sets Up Weekend Showdown

Webster 86 Greenville 77

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team set up a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown for this Saturday with an 86-77 win at Greenville College.  Webster, who improves to 12-2 in the SLIAC, has a date at first place Spalding University on February 15.  The win was the Gorloks fifth straight.  Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) led Webster with a team season-high 34 points.

Smith eclipsed his high of 31 points, scored in a 71-51 win earlier this week over Iowa Wesleyan College at Grant Gym.  Smith has been on a scoring binge as of late, scoring 84 points (28 per game) in his last three contests.  Smith was 11-19 from the field, and 10-11 from the free throw line.  Smith had a team-high four steals on the evening as well.

With two steals on the night, senior guard Hollis Edwards (Nashville, TN/McGavock HS) became the Webster career all-time high leader in steals, giving him 171.  Edwards eclipsed the mark of 170 held by Hall of Famer Dan Thoman (1987-91).  Edwards is 10th in the NCAA III for steals per game (2.84).

Freshman Hunter Ward (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) had 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists in the win. Freshman guard Adam Etter (Albers, IL/Mater Dei HS) came off the bench to score 11 points and had three assists.  Kevin Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS) had a team-high nine rebounds to go along with nine points.  Webster shot 53.3% from the field (31-60) and was 17-22 (77.3%) at the charity stripe on the night.

Webster led 41-39 at halftime, and a three-point basket by Etter gave the Gorloks a 63-58 advantage with 7:30 left in the second half.  A Ward dunk at 4:30 put Webster out in front, 67-59.  Ward hit a three-pointer at 3:40 to extend the Gorlok lead to 70-59.  A couple three-pointers by the Panthers in the final minutes made it mildly exciting, but Webster free throws, particularly by Smith, sealed the victory.

The Gorloks are 15-6 overall and tied with MacMurray College at 12-2 for second place in the SLIAC.  The team hits the road for the showdown on February 15 in Louisville, KY, against first place Spalding.  The Golden Eagles lead the SLIAC with a 13-1 record.  The game has been chosen by the SLIAC as its Game of the Week.  Webster then travels to Westminster College on February 19.
