The Webster University men's tennis team chose a tropical spot to open up play in 2014...in the Chicago area, as it split two indoor matches on February 22 in Naperville, IL. The Gorloks lost to host North Central College, 8-1, before ending the day with a win by the same score over Dominican University.
Newcomer Juan Granizo (FR, Quito,Ecuaor/Alberto Einstein) had the most successful start to the season, winning both singles matches, at #1 vs Dominican, and at #2 vs North Central, the Gorloks' only point vs North Central. He and doubles mate Carlton Pointdexter (JR, St. Louis, MO/McCluer North HS) won 8-0 over Dominican and lost 5-8 vs. North Central in his collegiate debut.
Top returning singles player, Travis Blair (SO, Jerseyville, IL/Jerseyville HS) lost a battle at #1 vs North Central, losing 4-6, 6-4, 7-10, before winning easily at #2, 6-0, 6-0, vs Dominican.
Another newcomer to the squad, freshman Skyler Adams (Ironton, MO/Arcadia Valley HS) also had some success in his collegiate debut as well, coming back to win in straight sets at #4 vs Dominican after a loss to North Central. Adams had a split at doubles with returner Beau Kolba (SR, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS), defeating Dominican 8-0 after a 0-8 loss to North Central.
