Box Score Staying one game out of first in the race for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, the Webster University men's basketball team downed Principia College, 84-47, on February 6 in Elsah, IL. The Gorloks are 9-2 in the SLIAC, one game behind MacMurray College (IL) and Spalding University (KY), both 10-1 in the conference.
Aaron Griffin (JR, Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS) led Webster with 14 points and nine rebounds. Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) had 12 points and a team-high five steals. The Gorloks forced 17 turnovers and had 16 steals as a team, turning the ball over only six times in the game. The Webster defense held the Panthers to a 24.6 shooting percentage for the contest.
Jarrod Huskey (SR, Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro HS) and freshman guard Adam Etter (Albers, IL/Mater Dei HS) each had 10 points off the bench for Webster. Guard Hunter Ward (FR, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) had eight points and seven rebounds.
Webster took a commanding lead at the intermission, 45-24, as the Gorloks shot 50% for the half (18-36) and had 11 steals. Smith had four of the steals and finished with nine points for the half. Griffin led the Gorloks with 10 points and seven rebounds In the first.
Webster kept the pedal to the medal in the second, outscoring the Panthers, 39-23, for the 84-47 final. This is the second straight contest the Gorloks have held their opponent under 50 points, giving up 45 in a 73-45 win at Blackburn on January 29.
The Gorloks are 9-2 in the SLIAC with the victory. MacMurray comes to Grant this weekend. Webster can pull at least into a second place tie with a win over the Highlanders.
Webster is 12-6 overall on the season. The Gorloks are home on February 8 as they face MacMurray, then host Iowa Wesleyan on February 10, making up a contest postponed on February 1 because of weather.
