The Webster men's tennis team improved to 6-3 with two blankings, beating Illinois College, 9-0 on April 4, and Fontbonne University, 9-0 on April 5. Both matches took place at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. The Gorloks won their fifth straight match since starting the season 1-3.
Against the Illinois College Blueboys, the Gorloks grabbed a 3-0 lead at doubles, with a come from behind battle at the #1 spot by Travis Blair (SO, Jerseyville, IL/Jerseyville HS) and freshman Skyler Adams (Ironton, MO/Arcadia Valley HS). Down 7-6, Blair and Adams won three straight games to take the match, 9-7.
Freshman Juan Granizo (Quito, Ecuador/Collegio Alberto Einstein) and Daniel DeVasto (JR, St. Louis, MO/St. John Vianney HS) had an easier time, winning 8-4 at #2, and freshman Eric Bateman (Maryland Heights, MO/Pattonville HS) and Zach Selby (JR, Redding, CA/Enterprise HS) an even easier time at #3, winning 8-0.
Blair, Granizo, Adams, Carlton Poindexter (JR, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS), Beau Kolba (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS), and freshman Chris Morris (St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS) all won at singles in straight sets.
Against an undermanned Fontbonne squad, the Gorloks had a battle at the #1 singles as Kolba and Poindexter prevailed, 9-7. Bateman and DeVasto won 8-2 at #2 and the Gorloks won a default at #3 as the Griffins only had four available players.
Granizo, Blair, Adams, and Bateman all won in straight sets in singles. Granizo improves to 8-1 in singles on the season and Adams to 6-3. Complete results were:
