Eureka Hands Webster First SLIAC Loss, 70-64

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team was handed its first loss in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 70-64 loss at Eureka College (IL) on January 3.  The Gorloks, the pre-season favorite in the SLIAC, fell to 3-1 in league play.

Webster had taken a 34-30 halftime lead.  Ahmad Smith (SR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) had 15 points and five rebounds for the half.  Gorloks shot 42% for the half, and out-rebounded the Red Devils, 22-19. 

Eureka chipped away and pulled ahead five minutes into the second half and extended its lead to seven points at several junctures.  Each time Webster closed in on the lead, the Red Devils had an answer for the Gorloks to hold on for the win.

Webster wound up shooting 42% from the field for the game, but were only 3-14 (21%) from the three-point line and only 11-21 (52%) from the free throw line on the night.

With 22 points in the contest, Smith boosted his career total to 1210 points, moving him into seventh place on Webster University's all-time scoring list.  Smith passed Ryan Turk (2005-2009), who finished with 1188 points at Webster.  Smith is just one point behind Webster Hall of Famer Eric Stack in sixth place, who had 1211 points for the Gorloks.

Center Aaron Griffin (SR, Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS) had a double double, finishing with 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.  C. J. Moore (SO, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian HS) had 13 points in the game.  Hunter Ward (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS), had nine points and four rebounds on the evening.

Webster is 7-4 overall on the season.  The Gorloks host back to back SLIAC contests, facing Iowa Wesleyan College on January 8, and Greenville College (IL) on January 10 at Grant Gymnasium.
