Wesleyan Downs Webster at Grant, 87-67

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team lost its second straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest, 87-67, to Iowa Wesleyan College, on January 8, at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks fell to a Tiger squad that came into the contest 1-4 in the SLIAC.

Webster fell behind, 15-19, with 9:20 left in the first half, and Wesleyan continued to build its lead through halftime as it built a 19-point halftime lead.  Wesleyan outshot Webster 57% (20-35) to 33% (9-27) and in addition to its shooting woes, the Gorloks also committed six more turnovers than Wesleyan (9-3) in the half.

A pair of three-pointers by Hunter Ward (SO, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) in the opening minutes of the second half gave the Gorloks some life as they shaved seven points off the deficit to close within 46-34 at 17:20.   After the Tigers built the lead back up to 50-34, Ward hit two more three-pointers to make it a 10-point game, 50-40.

A pair of Aaron Griffin (SR, Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS) baskets reduced the margin to 51-44 at 13:20 and a scoop by Jonathan Odjo (SO, West Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast HS) at 12:00 put the Gorloks within five at 51-46.  But the Tigers continued to pound the Gorloks under the basket for easy layups to bulk the lead back up to a 15-point bulge, 77-62, with 3:20 remaining in the game, and went onto win.

Griffin wound up with his second double double in a row, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, both game highs.  Ward finished with a double double as well, netting 18 points and adding 10 rebounds.  Ward also had a team-high six assists in the game.  It was Ward's sixth double double of the season.

Ahmad Smith (SR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) had eight points in the game, an off-night for the SLIAC's leading scorer at 18.2 points per game.  But they were historic points as Smith leap-frogged into fifth place on Webster's career all-time scoring list.  Smith, with 1218 career points, passed Eric Stack (1987-91) with 1211, and John Cooksey (1991-94) who had 1212 points, respectively

Iowa Wesleyan had three players all hit the 18 point  mark as it shot 54% (33-61) for the game, while Webster finished at 44% (24-54) on the evening.  The Tigers only committed six turnovers total in the game as opposed to the Gorloks' 15 miscues.

The Gorloks are now 7-5 overall on the season and are right back home on January 10 vs. Greenville College (IL) at Grant.  Greenville will enter the contest in first place in the SLIAC with a 5-0 record.
