Men's Soccer Clinches SLIAC Tourney Berth Downing Greenville

Box Score Ignited by a pair of Brendan Shields goals in the first half, the Webster University men's soccer team went on to defeat Greenville College, 3-1, on October 31 at the Soccer Park.  Webster was fighting for its life to secure a spot in the SLIAC Tournament, needing to finish in the conference's top four.  A loss would have dropped them into fifth place, but instead the Gorloks have return match-up with Greenville in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament on November 4.

Shields (JR, St. Peter's, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) scored 10 minutes into the game to give Webster a 1-0 lead.  Drew Quisenberry (FR, Morton, IL/Morton HS) got the assist on the goal.  Shields scored his second of the game, and fourth of the season, at the 31:00 mark to send Webster into the half with a 2-0 lead.  Joey Florian (JR, Ballwin, MO/John F. Kennedy HS) was credited with the assist.

The Panthers made it exciting with a goal past Webster goalie Alex Bergmann (FR, Wentzville, MO/St. Dominic's HS) with just 2:45 remaining in the game, but Zach Gyuricza (FR, Chicago, IL/St. Viator HS) added an insurance tally with only 30 seconds remaining to secure the win.  For Gyuricza, it was his team-leading ninth goal.

Bergmann picked up the win in goal and improved to 7-1 on the year.  The Panthers had 12 shots and Bergmann made two saves in the win.  Webster outshot Greenville, 17-12, with the Gorloks having eight shots on goal.

Sitting in fourth place in the SLIAC at 5-2-1, the Gorloks were pretty much in a must win situation vs. Greenville, as a loss would have dropped them to 5-3-1.  Third place Spalding University was 6-2 in conference going into the final day of play and fifth place Fontbonne University was 5-3.  Spalding would finish a half game ahead of Webster even with a loss at 6-3.

Fontbonne, playing at Iowa Wesleyan, would finish at 6-3 with a win and a half game ahead of the Webster as well.  Fontbonne indeed did finish at 6-3, so Webster guided its own destiny with the win over Greenville.  The Gorloks now have secured a spot in the tournament every year since 2007.

Webster wound up 6-2-1 in the SLIAC and are 8-9-1 overall.  The Gorloks' game vs. Greenville will be at Greenville, IL.  The Panthers finished in second at 7-2 in the SLIAC.
