Webster Brushes Off Blackburn, 84-64

Box Score Hanging onto third place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Webster University men's basketball team defeated Blackburn College, 84-64, on February 14 at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks didn't show the Beavers any loving on Valentine's Day, in improving to 10-5 in the SLIAC.

Webster took an early lead in the game and held a 32-21 halftime edge.  Both teams came out running to start the second, but the up tempo pace still resulted in the Gorloks leading, 52-40, with 11:40 left in the half.   In the game's final 10 minutes, Webster continued to build on its lead, forging ahead, 78-61 with 3:49 remaining, on its way to the 20-point victory.

Ahmad Smith's (SR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) 16 points in the game moved him into second place on Webster's all-time scoring list with 1285 for his career.  Smith leapt over both Darrin Hoggatt (2004-08) and Paul Zellmer (1997-99) to jump from fourth to second place.  Dan Thoman (1987-90) is Webster's all-time leading scorer at 1606.

Smith also had eight rebounds in the contest, tying Danny Zehner (JR, St. Louis, MO/Oakville HS) for the team-high.  Zehner had a season-high 15 points on 5-8 shooting, 3-6 from the three-point line, on the afternoon. 
   
Hunter Ward (SO, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) had a team-high 18 points, shooting 6-11 from the field and 4-8 from beyond the arc.  Ward also had a team-high four steals for the game.
As a team, Webster shot 28-58 (48%) and was 11-28 (39%) from the three-point line.  The Gorloks out rebounded the Beavers, 35-26, including 14-7 on the offensive boards.

As has been a recent trend for Webster, the Gorloks handled the ball well again, committing only 10 turnovers.  Webster has had 10 or less turnovers in four of its last five games.

The Gorloks have won six of their last eight games as they are 14-8 overall on the season.  Webster has an eight-game win streak over Blackburn in SLIAC play, winning 16 of the teams' last 17 meetings.

Spalding University makes the trip from Louisville, KY, to face the Gorloks on February 16.  The Webster 2014 baseball and volleyball teams will be honored at halftime of the women's game and the 2014 men's and women's soccer teams will be honored at halftime of the men's game that evening.  Webster hosts Eureka College on February 21 in the season's final home game.  It is Senior Day and the Gorloks' seniors will be honored also that afternoon.
