Webster Shuts Down Spalding, 56-47

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team moved to within a half game of second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with a 56-47 win over Spalding University (KY) at Grant Gym on February 16.  The day's snowfall may have cancelled evening classes for the University, but the Gorloks still gave a lesson in keeping pace for the SLIAC title.

The game was a defensive contest from the start with the score tied, 6-6, with almost eight minutes gone in the first half before Danny Zehner (JR, St. Louis, MO/Oakville HS) connected for a three-pointer.  The Gorloks stepped it up offensively and took a 19-11 lead at the 7:30 mark.  The Golden Eagles went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 19-17 before a Hunter Ward (SO, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) jumper at 5:00.  Webster entered the locker room up, 26-22.

The defensive struggle between the teams continued in the second half with both teams scoring only six points each in the first seven minutes as Webster led, 32-28, at 12:45.
The Gorloks opened up a lot of breathing room with a 15-3 run to give them a 47-31 lead with 7:20 left in the half.  The run was highlighted by a Zehner basket and bonus free throw and another basket by Zehner, off a nifty feed by Joseph Henry (Leavenworth, KS/Lansing HS), on a fast break.

Spalding made a run of its own, cutting the lead to 53-45, with 1:30 remaining, but that is close as the Golden Eagles would get.

Zehner led Webster with 13 points.  Aaron Griffin (SR, Farm Haven, MS/Velma Jackson HS) had a team-high nine rebounds and added seven points.   Webster improved to 11-5 in the SLIAC while Spalding fell to 12-5.  MacMurray College (IL) holds down first place with an 11-4 record.

Lost in the excitement of the team's big win at Fontbone University on February 11, was Head Coach Chris Bunch's 200th career coaching victory.  Bunch was honored in a pre-game ceremony, being presented with a basketball marking the special occasion.  In his 13 year career, Bunch has a 201-135 career won-loss record.  The Webster 2014 men's and women's soccer teams were honored for their outstanding seasons at halftime of the men's game.

The Gorloks host Eureka College on February 21 in the regular season final home game.  It is Senior Day and the Gorloks' seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
